Senses of Joy

Sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste.

The five senses.

Joy is not confined to a single sense, but permeates them all.  Looking over my list for this week, I kept noticing how specific ones engaged my senses.  All of this reminded me of this quote:

“We all underestimate our need for joy. If we are not careful, we live as if our schedules are our lives. We cross one thing after another off the list. At the end of the day, we have completed our chores, but we haven’t necessarily been present for our own experiences.” Mary Pipher, Seeking Peace

To be presentexisting or occurring in a place or a thing.  To pause, to dwell there, to be fully there.  Engaged. Active. Excited. Fully in the moment.  I want to go beyond the one sense in these moments of joy and into being there with all of them.  Creating that memory full of richness and vibrancy requires attention and being able to soak it up.  So, that’s my goal for this next week, but in the meantime, here are some moments of joy from this last week:

1129. seeing the sunshine

1138. seeing a cute little baby

1141. saying things out loud to people

1146. culver’s dollar ice cream

1147. being on recess duty

1148. my fifth graders

1162. wearing blue for autism awareness day

1167. smelling the beautiful tulips

1174. my reaction to getting flowers

1180. laughing at each other

1191. getting “lost” in rei and a great trip with fabulous people

1197. hiding easter eggs and then watching the “adults” find them

1200. wii with the fam on easter

Do you see joy with all of your senses? What one comes most naturally to see joy with for you?
